Design and Build Quality
It is an open secret that appears to need to be good. This the first impression you get from any product. That is what missing in the rugged phones. Most of the rugged phone looks the same. But that is called a rugged look. And, this phone also well justified with its rugged name. By seeing it, you will get to know you are holding a rugged phone. But still, it looks like a standard phone design. It doesn’t look weird in the hand at all.
The entire phone is black color with green and red accent on two other variation. If you ask me, I would personally pick the red accent variant. That looks rad! In order to make it strong corners are thicker than normal phone. That makes it more shockproof. In the front there is a waterdrop notch display and big chins in the bottom. On the back phone got four camera setup. Everywhere you will see lot of screw tightening up the phone against any possible damages.
Let’s talk about the buttons. It has three buttons on the right side. In the middle with a very suitable position, you will get the power button. And, above that button, there are the volume keys. With my small hand, I was able to reach these buttons perfectly. On the left side, there is a dedicated button that you can customize with 7 different functions that you need the most.
Well macro sim card slot is above that dedicated function button. And there is USB type C! Yeeeeah, finally rugged phone industry getting sense that what we guys really need.
Wait a minute, did I talk about the weight? This phone has 284 gram weight. According to normal phone it look like a bit. But weight distribution is very good so you will not feel that discomfort in your hand.
So, in overall perspective this phone turn out to be decent but not exciting in design and build quality. It has everything that you can expect from a rugged phone but nothing special.
As you all are eager to know how rugged this phone can be! Surely this is the most important part of this phone. And, I would like to happily inform you that there is everything that you can expect from a rugged phone. Including all the latest rugged features such as IP68 rated water and dustproof, IP69K rated temperature proof, Military standard 810G rated strong.
First of all the waterproof, It is IP68 rated waterproof that means it can survive minimum 30 minutes in the water while it is 1.5 meter deep. But that is the minimum capacity god knows how far it can goes. And, I am definitely not interest to test its limit. But I think this is enough for your phone safety while you are in the boat or near any water source. Also IP68 means it is fully dust proof. You can carry it anywhere even in the dirtiest mine field. Also if you drop your phone in the nastiest mud just wash it with water, everything will be fine as it was before.
The phone has IP69K rated protection against temperature. It is actually the limit of the phone operating with maximum and minimum temperature. Although they didn’t mention its limit I can bet you can go to the hot desert where you will struggle to breathe your phone will run smoothly without getting damage by over temperature. The same thing happens when you will enjoy your nice ice fishing or skating in the ice. Even you go to the Siberian glacier phone should be working fine. But be careful about your hand it may not survive that kind of temperature.
Also. it has military standard 810G rated protection against drop and shock. This phone looks strong and also remain strong against any obstacle it can possibly face. Most of the time you drop the phone. Especially if you working somewhere higher from the land then it is difficult for normal phone to survive. But not to worry about this phone. It can handle that kind of drop easily.
After seeing how strong it is you may wonder what the earth is made off! Well, it is a combination of metal and hard plastic. You will the metal on the two sides of the phone and also in the back. If it was possible they may make a screen from metal also! Just to be kidding but the screen is also pretty strong.
As I said above it the strongest screen from every aspect. But strong is not the only issue for display. A display should be long and well colour maintain. So, you can watch anything smoothly with eye pleasing. According to the rugged phone history, this is not a bad display at all.
Blackview BV 6900 has 5.86 inch medium size IPS LCD display with Full HD plus resolution. It has 1080 X 2280 pixels of resolution and 432PPI pixel density. That is the official record of this display. Beyond that it is a good display with smooth color balance, enough brightness and sharpness. There was no problem for me to see everything in the daylight.
But there is a very poor screen to body ratio of this display. 82% is not enough it shows thicker chin and bezels around it. Since we are all expecting full screen display in this days. And I should mention this a waterdrop notch display.
Since this a rugged phone Blackview did not forget to put better protection on the screen too. It has the corning gorilla glass protection over the display so that it can not damage easily.
Overall I’d say, this is not over the top display for the rugged industry but according to its budget there is no such thing to complain about. But there should a larger display with a better screen to body ratio.
In this section most of the budget phone struggle. It is very hard to find better performance on a low budget phone. If there is better processor maybe they’ve shortened in the RAM and ROM. Since they have low budget they can not overcome this problem. Probably this phone does some balance on the performance by putting everything over the edge according to the budget.
Blackview BV6900 has MediaTek Helio P25 Octa-Core processor. Well, you can call this processor the flagship of lower mid-budget. Such a good processor for low power efficiency and high performance. Wait don’t compare with flagship processor. I do mean about low and mid-budget range.
ARM Mali-T880 MP2 GPU accompanies this Helio P25 processor for better rendering and graphics result. While CPU has 2.4 GHz clock speed GPU has 1GHz as well. There is some benchmark score that you can look up below images.
Also, it has 4GB LPDDR3 RAM that comes with 64GB eMMC onboard storage. That LPDDR3 is bothering me. At least they could put a DDR4 RAM without adding budget. Anyway, something is better than nothing. And for the storage, you always have an option to extend that up to 32GB via TF card.
All of these hardware runs on Android 9 pie operating system. That brings up the maximum performance outcome that we all can expect. In daily uses there is no lag at all. Also playing any games can be smoother while you will play it on lower graphics. That is very obvious that it will not run on high graphics. At least it able to play all of the high end games that is a plus point.
Overall what should I say about the performance? You have seen everything on your own eyes. I just bring back all the metrics so that you can decide on your own. But if I have to say, this is the edge you can expect from this price range.
If you love to take pictures very often and you little hobby of photography then hold on tight this is awesome news for you. This phone has quad camera on the backside. To be honest there are only few rugged phone out there in the market that holds four camera in the back.
There is a 16MP main camera with enough wide on it. Also it assist with 8MP ultra wide lens, then a 0.3 MP portrait lens, and another 0.3 MP lens.
Main camera has enough sharpness and color balance. But just to be keep a fact in the mind these all camera has over sharpening problem. Also not good at the low light situation. And that 8MP ultra wide angle camera has 120° field of view for taking more wide scene than normal.
Also the portrait on this camera looks very good. And there is a underwater mode too. That helps to take photo while you are swimming.
But it can only take 1080P video with the back camera. That is the least a normal camera can do nowadays.
Well there is a 16MP front camera as well. That extra mega pixel number captures better selfie than most of the rugged phone out in the market. Without that over sharpening issue you will not find anything that bother you.
For a rugged it turned to be a good camera setup that is obvious. But rugged phone industry should focus on the video quality too.
If you are a rugged phone lover that means you love to go outdoor and you have outdoor job as well. That means there is no easy place for charging the phone. Sometimes you may went out for more than a day. So, having better battery backup is the vital point you should care off.
Blackview BV 6900 has 5580 mAh battery on it. According to its display size and its CPU it will last longer than any high end processors. It will give you 26 hours of talk time and 600 hours of standby time. That means without any issue it will run 2/3 days in normal use. I used three days on my own.
And since it has USB Type C it charge very fast too. That is another important thing for having large battery size.
This phone has Dual 4G sim and all necessary sensors that you need. Specially talk about that NFC features. It is very important one. You can now your google pay to pay your shopping money. You don’t need to have physical card anymore.
Also it has necessary survival app package that gonna help you in certain situations.
As a rugged phone it will get highest number in my eyes. It has everything that can make a phone rugged. But in order to other things such as performance, battery backup, camera these all have according its price range That is pretty obvious phone manufacturer can not put over the budget hardware within low budget. They have other models which contains better hardware but cost you more money.
So, if you are intermediate level rugged phone user then you should try this. Since it is on limited budget option you can carry this phone with your regular phone just to be use whenever you need to. For outdoor survival worker this phone could be life saver one. Sometimes normal phone does not work due to natural condition or anything else. But this phone can handle more catastrophic situation and works fine to keep you alive and connect with others at any cost. So go for it if you are outdoor worker or one of the camping lovers.
